Unlike child support, spousal support (or “Alimony”) is not set by statute and does not carry with it strict rules of compliance. Spousal support is a more changeable issue in the family law context and should be treated as such in all circumstances. Whenever possible, it should not be relied upon as the sole provider of income. However, this is not to discount the equitable role is serves following a couples divorce: to ensure that the financial benefits of the parties individually continue to be shared as if the parties had never separated.
